Bootheel couple wins $2 million in lotto drawing

When Amanda Richardson and Michael Magarian’s baby is born, they will have plenty of cash on hand to spoil it and themselves.

On Monday morning, the Dexter parents-to-be picked up a check for $2 million from the Missouri Lottery.

The couple won it after matching all six Missouri Lotto numbers drawn on June 5.

Richardson, 20, said it felt “like a dream” when she and Magarian, 45, realized they’d won the big money.

“We were just so excited,” Richardson said.  “I told him that we won and he didn’t believe me.  We had to look it over about three times.”

Lake Ponder reopened for swimmers

Lake Ponder reopened for swimmers

Lake Ponder at Crowley’s Ridge State Park is once again open to swimmers.

The lake was closed Friday, June 7, after the water tested positive for E. coli.

According to an email from the Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism, a family of geese that had settled on the lake was to blame for the increase in bacteria.

Following four clear water samples, the Green County Health Department has declared the swimming area safe for reopening.

First bill by MO Rep. Smith seeks balanced budget

JEFFERSON CITY, MO (AP) - New southeast Missouri congressman Jason Smith has proposed a balanced budget amendment as his first piece of legislation in Washington.

Smith's proposed amendment to the U.S. Constitution would require a three-fifths vote of the House and Senate for federal spending to exceed revenues in any fiscal year. The requirement also could be waived by a simple majority in years in which the U.S. is engaged in a military conflict that poses a threat to national security.
