New MO House committee to study House operations

JEFFERSON CITY, MO (AP) - The Missouri House is creating a committee to study itself.

House Speaker Tim Jones says he has formed a new committee to examine the operations of the House of Representatives and recommend potential changes to the way it conducts business.

The panel will have a long name: The Interim House Committee on Legislative Institutional Infrastructure and Process.

It will be led by Rep. Dwight Scharnhorst, a Republican from St. Louis County.

Missouri to test slip-resistant road treatment

JEFFERSON CITY, MO (AP) - Missouri has received a federal grant to test a new type of road treatment intended to keep cars from slipping off highways when it rains or snows.

The Missouri Department of Transportation says it will apply the "high friction surface treatment" to a pair of curves on U.S. 54 and Missouri 179 in Jefferson City.

If the agency has enough money, it may also apply the treatment at two sites on Interstate 44 near Rolla.

Angels needed for children's hospital fundraiser

The inaugural Angels for Angels fundraiser benefitting Arkansas Children’s Hospital and its medical transport helicopter, Angel One, will be held from 4 until 8 p.m. Saturday, June 8, at Reynolds Park in Paragould.

The event will feature live entertainment, a silent auction, and bake sale.  There will also be a children’s area offering games and train rides.

Admission is free.

All of the proceeds from the event will be donated to Arkansas Children’s Hospital for the cost of operating Angel One.

Lady Luck Casino will host a blood drive on Tuesday, June 18, from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Sponsored by Lifeblood Donor Fest, the drive will be held at the Lone Wolf VIP Room inside the casino pavilion.

“We invite everyone to come…and give blood,” said Polly Lunceford, human resources coordinator.  “Not only are our employees going to be taking part, we encourage the public to come also.  If can give, please give.  It takes such a small amount of time to save a life.”

Each donor will receive a Donor Fest t-shirt.

Road construction frustrating residents

HORNERSVILLE, MO (KAIT) - Hornersville residents are concerned about a highway construction project taking place in Dunklin County.

According to a notice posted on the Missouri Department of Transportation web site, "Route Y in Dunklin County will be closed as contractor crews replace the bridge with a box culvert over Buffalo Creek.

This section of roadway is located between County Road 532 and County Road 536.

The bridge is scheduled to reopen by 7 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 15."

Nixon announces incentives for SE Mo. company

PORTAGEVILLE, MO (AP) - A southeast Missouri business that makes chrome-plated plastic auto parts is receiving state aid to train its employees.

Gov. Jay Nixon said Thursday that Missouri is providing up to $809,000 of job training services for 350 employees at SRG Global in Portageville.

He says the training incentives are part of a $4.2 million capital investment by the company.

The job training will be provided through Three Rivers Community College and will focus on mechanical and electrical skills, safety and team building.

Big Cat Quest postponed due to "dangerous" high water

If you had plans to attend next weekend’s Big Cat Quest in New Madrid, better reel them in.

The Chamber of Commerce announced today the event, scheduled for Saturday, June 15, has been postponed.

According to an email from Christina McWaters, executive director of the chamber, “high water and dangerous river conditions” have forced them to reschedule.

The event will now be held on Saturday, October 5, in conjunction with the Bootheel Missouri town’s annual Fall Festival.
