A family of five managed to escape their burning home safely Thursday morning.
Now investigators believe the fire was deliberately set.
Just before 2:30 Thursday morning, Steele police and fire crews were called to a structure fire at 502 Wright Street, according to an email Steele Police Chief Billy Joe Stanfield.
When officers arrived, they found the home in flames.
The husband and wife said the discovered their home was on fire after they were awakened by a loud noise, Stanfield said.
The couple and their three children managed to safely escape.
It took fire crews five hours to extinguish the flames.
During the investigation, Stanfield said, it appeared the fire may have been deliberately set.
He said his department and the Missouri State Fire Marshal are investigating it as first-degree arson.
The victim’s employer is offering a reward of $10,000 and the fire marshal is offering a $5,000 reward to anyone who can provide information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons involved.
