No fireworks in the forest this year

 

Visitors to Mark Twain National Forest will not be able to celebrate the 4th of July with fireworks.

Acting Forest Supervisor Teresa Chase announced Thursday  open fires will be restricted due to the heightened fire danger, drought conditions and dry weather forecast for the next few weeks.

Chase said “no open fires are permitted except within campfire rings or pedestal grills” in campgrounds and picnic areas.

According to Wikipedia, the Snowy Owl is one of the largest in North America.  Usually found in Canada, they are the official bird of Quebec.

So how did one wind up all the way down here in Mississippi County?

That's a question experts at Arkansas State University and Chris Hutchings of Gosnell are still asking.

Chris sent these photos of a baby white owl that had fallen out of its nest a few months ago.

MO-DOT eases restrictions for flood repairs

 

While construction is under way to repair levees in southeast Missouri, the Missouri Department of Transportation announced today it will allow heavier than normal loads of sand and gravel used in these repairs to travel on selected Missouri highways.

Private and for-hire motor carriers may carry up to 10 percent more than their licensed weight.  However, the heavier loads are not allowed to use interstate routes or national defense highway routes.

River commission wants to hear from residents

 

The Mississippi River Commission plans a stop in New Madrid when it conducts its annual low-water inspection trip on the Mississippi River August 15-19.

The commission will conduct a public meeting Monday, August 15, at the City Front.

It's a chance for residents to voice their concerns, ideas and issues concerning flood control and the Mississippi River and Tributaries project, environmental issues, recreation and navigation.
