Driver seriously hurt when van hits storm shelter

A Washington state woman was seriously injured Sunday afternoon when her van hit a tornado shelter in New Madrid County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, 28-year-old Tara J. Jones of Spokane was driving south on U.S. Highway 61 near Kewanee when her 1999 Chrysler Town and Country ran off the left side of the road.

The van then struck a concrete tornado shelter.

Jones, who was not wearing a seat belt, was partially thrown from the vehicle.

She was taken by ambulance to St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau with serious injuries.
