Sikeston police say a boy shot his younger sister Sunday evening while playing with their father’s gun.
The shooting happened just after 6 p.m. at a home on Reuben Street, according to Lt. Jim McMillen of the Sikeston Department of Public Safety (DPS).
A 9-year-old girl and her 11-year-old brother were in their father’s bedroom when the boy picked up a loaded .40 caliber pistol and shot his sister in the shoulder, Lt. McMillen said.
Family members rushed the girl to Missouri Delta Medical Center and called 911.
Doctors expect the child to recover.
Lt. McMillen says DPS investigators are conducting interviews to determine if the shooting was accidental or intentional.
