A Bootheel Missouri man was airlifted to The MED in Memphis Wednesday night following a crash on the Mississippi River bridge in Pemiscot County.
The crash happened around 9:30 p.m. on I-555, seven miles east of Caruthersville.
According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol crash report, 22-year-old Nicholas L. Womble of Hayti was passing another vehicle when he lost control of his 2004 Chevy Tahoe. The SUV then slammed into the bridge’s retaining wall and overturned.
Womble, who was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown from the vehicle.
He was flown by helicopter to Elvis Presley Trauma Center (The MED) in Memphis with serious injuries.
According to our sister station, KFVS-TV in Cape Girardeau, the bridge was closed for several hours while crews worked to clear the scene.
