SEMO to host congressional debate

 

Voters will get a chance to learn more about the candidates vying for Missouri’s 8th Congressional District seat.

KFVS-12, the Southeast Missourian, and Southeast Missouri State University will present a debate between the candidates on Tuesday, May 28.

The debate will be held at 6:30 p.m. in the Robert F. and Gertrude L. Shuck Music Recital Hall at the university’s river campus.  KFVS will broadcast the event live.

Ever wonder what really goes on in Jefferson City?  Secretary of State Jason Kander just made it easier for you to find out.

On Tuesday, Kander announced the launch of a new website:  TheMissouriChannel.com.

The website includes archived audio files of floor debates from the state Senate and House of Representatives, allowing users to listen at their convenience.  Previously, Missourians could only listen to live-streaming debate.

Missouri State Representative Steve Cookson has been named Chairman of the House Committee on Elementary and Secondary Education.

Cookson, a Republican from Poplar Bluff, was chosen by Speaker of the House Timothy Jones.

In a news release from his office, Cookson said:

“I am humbled the Speaker has entrusted me with this tremendous responsibility.  There are several highly qualified representatives capable of administering this Chairmanship and to be chosen is truly a great honor.”

SALEM, Mo. (AP) - The public will have a chance to hear from some of the Republicans hoping to succeed Rep. Jo Ann Emerson in the U.S. House.

Republican candidate forums are scheduled Thursday evening in Salem and Jan. 17 in Cape Girardeau.

Emerson, who was re-elected in November, plans to resign by February to take a job as director of National Rural Electric Cooperative Association. Political party committees are to nominate candidates for a special election to succeed Emerson in southeast Missouri's 8th Congressional District.
